The Part-Time Nurse is licensed with the state of Illinois and provides nursing care under the supervision of the Registered Nurse, and as outlined in individual healthcare plans. This position strengthens and facilitates the educational process by improving and protecting the health status of children. The major focus of nursing services is the prevention of illness and disability, and the early detection and correction of health problems. The licensed practical nurse is uniquely qualified in preventive health, health assessment, and referral procedures.

Duties and Responsibilities

Relationship Building:

  • Create relationships with students and staff
  • Send out monthly health tips/ Provides information on health
  • Interface with outside resources dealing with health and well-being
  • Create an environment of positive working relationships  

Functional Duties:

  • Provides first aid care and medically prescribed services in the school, and on assigned school sponsored community outings.
  • Perform, administer, and provide nursing care appropriate for an LP/RN, but not limited to the following: Triage and assessing illness and injuries. Nursing care may include administration of oral medications and non-oral medications (i.e. injections, eye/ear, or rectal medications), mixing medications, blood glucose monitoring, nebulizer treatments, and other nursing care. Administer medication and treatments according to state law.
  • Maintains security of school health supplies
  • Knowledge of all health care related policies and procedures i.e. OSHA, bloodborne pathogen control plans
  • Work as a member of a team with health services staff to coordinate and carry out services. May participate in crisis intervention.
  • Screens and conducts health appraisals for students  
  • Provides follow-up evaluations on students as required
  • Recommends corrective action where problems are identified
  • Corresponds with parents on health needs of children
  • Records immunizations, health findings, and other relevant health data
  • Maintains Undesignated Epinephrine, including renewal, inspection and reporting in accordance with Giant Steps and State policies
  • Must be CPR/AED certified
  • Serves as a resource person to the classroom teacher and administrator in health instruction and as a member of the health curriculum development committees

Knowledge and Leadership Qualifications

  • Considerable knowledge of medical disorders and treatment
  • Considerable knowledge of child growth and development
  • Working knowledge of public health problems and procedures for treatment in coordination with other health and social service agencies
  • Working knowledge of Federal, State, and Local laws and regulations affecting the delivery of school health services
  • Some knowledge of the school organization and the community served
  • Ability to identify abnormal growth and development and symptoms of disease
  • Ability to coordinate and facilitate services between the school, local health agency, and other community resources
  • Ability to develop and maintain health records on students
  • Strong organizational skills
  • Excellent communication skills, oral and written
  • Familiarity with autism and other health impairments

Administration Duties:

  • Is responsible for maintaining and updating cumulative health records
  • Reviews, revises and implements emergency policies
  • Prepares first aid kits for building
  • Documents health office visits of students
  • Implements the school medication policy and procedure
  • Keep lines of communication open between nurse and teachers, nurse and administration, nurse and parents

Coordination Duties:

  • Interprets school health services to school personnel
  • Serves as a health liaison between school, home, and the community.
  • Encourages parents to maintain current immunization protection as recommended by the Department of Human Services
  • Helps school personnel recognize departures from appropriate behavior and growth patterns; helps students and staff adjust student programs when necessary to accommodate health needs of students
  • Serves as a resource person to school personnel

Minimum Job Requirements

  • Possession of a current license to practice professional nursing in Illinois
  • Three years of experience as a licensed practical nurse
  • Experience working with children that have disabilities

  • Passing PCM training is a requirement of this position. Participation in PCM training and adherence to the Professional Crisis Management Association’s guidelines require at least average physical fitness. Any physical limitations or conditions that may impact one’s ability to participate in PCM training or PCM must be made known to Giant Steps upon application, as performance of various physical tasks is a bona fide occupational requirement of this position.


  • The LPN/RN is a non-exempt position under the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA).


  • Salary that is commensurate with level of education and experience.


  • The LPN/RN follows the Teacher/Therapist calendar
    • Monday - Friday 9:30a - 2:30p during regular school year
    • Monday - Friday 9:30a - 1:15p for Extended Summer Year

Annual Performance Review

  • The LPN/RN will schedule his/her formal annual review meeting with the Registered Nurse two weeks prior to his/her performance review in June.
  • The LPN/RN will complete a draft personal evaluation to be used during the formal review two weeks prior to his/her performance review in June.
  • The LPN/RN performance review will be conducted in June of each year by the Registered Nurse.
