Instruct students and facilitate their learning in accordance with Giant Steps policies and state guidelines. Guide students in educational activities focused on a STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math) centered curriculum designed to promote intellectual, academic, and social growth. Teach essential skills that will contribute to students’ overall development as educated and responsible individuals.

Duties and Responsibilities

Relationship Building:

 Proactively create a culture of collaboration and community with staff across all program areas

 Build rapport with students and maximize instructional relationships

 Coach faculty and staff on tips and techniques for integrating STEAM content into the daily curriculum

  • Ability to develop positive working relationships      and effectively collaborate with other staff members
  • Interface      with outside resources dealing with STEAM topics

Functional Duties:

  • Prepare      lessons and deliver STEAM-oriented instruction (Science, Technology,      Engineering, Art, and Mathematics) daily to students K – 12 through      Project-Based, Problem-Based, and Hands-on Learning methods
  • Teach Giant      Steps approved curriculum while creating a classroom and total school      environment that is conducive to learning and is appropriate to the      maturity and interests of the students
  • Employs a variety of instructional      techniques, instructional media, and performance assessments which guide      the learning process toward academic achievement and curriculum goals
  • Establish clear objectives for all      lessons, curricular units, and projects and communicates these objectives      to the students
  • Formatively assess the      accomplishments of students in a variety of ways on a regular basis and communicate      students’ progress to the Classroom Teacher and other team members
  • Work with      Classroom Teachers to assess specific student needs and identify      appropriate modifications and interventions needed for students to be      successful
  • Encourage students to work      collaboratively to solve problems, to think creatively, and promote      students’ use of higher-order thinking skills
  • Ability to work with a variety of      students by utilizing a variety of different student supports, including,      behavior plans, visual supports, sensory techniques, communication      supports, or classroom structure to ensure student success and      demonstrating creativity in approaches used with students
  • Builds effective relationships      with parents through regular communication as needed and is available to      parents for education-related purposes, e.g., open house, conferences,      extra-curricular activities
  • Participates      in professional growth and development and stays abreast of current      research through continuing education, educational seminars, workshops,      conferences, membership in professional organizations of the subject      taught, and attendance at corporation-sponsored in- services
  • Complete      other duties as assigned

Knowledge and Leadership Qualifications

 Knowledge within the STEAM content field and ability to implement an instructional K-12 program

 Strong knowledge base of autism and educational best practices for working with students with autism

 Possess a deep knowledge of curriculum, instruction, and assessment best practices

 Student focused 

 High energy and passion for Giant Steps’ mission is essential

 Possess an autism sensitivity

Minimum Job Requirements

Possession of a current Illinois LBS1 Professional Educator License (PEL) valid for grades PreK-21

Three-years of experience as a professional classroom teacher

A baccalaureate degree is required. Master’s degree preferred

The STEAM Instructor is an exempt position under the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA).


Salary is commensurate with level of education and experience.


The STEAM Instructor follows the Day School Calendar.

Work is typically performed indoors within the school facility

Moderate physical movement is required for the job

Minimal exposure to physical risk is anticipated

Annual Performance Review

The ­­­­­­ STEAM Instructor will schedule his/her formal annual review meeting with the Director of Curriculum, Instruction, and Assessment two weeks prior to his/her performance review in June.

The STEAM Instructor will complete a draft personal evaluation to be used during the formal review two weeks prior to his/her performance review in June.

The STEAM Instructor performance review will be conducted in June of each year by the Director of Curriculum, Instruction, and Assessment.
